1 John 1:8-10
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” 1 John 1:9.
“The devil made me do it!” Have you ever heard or used that old expression? I have heard it many times (maybe even muttered it a time or two). It sure is a whole lot easier to blame my sin on anything other than myself. Satan is in the tempting business, but I have to take a little responsibility when it comes to my evils. It is a whole lot easier to fool myself into thinking that my sin is no fault of my own, but this action is not according to the truth that God has established in His Word.
It would be downright silly to deceive ourselves by claiming to be sinless (verse 8). How often do we live as though we are perfect instead of admitting our sins and doing something about them? These verses tell us that if we are not careful we can actually be calling God a liar by our actions.
So, what are we to do about this sin problem?
We are to confess our sins. Confession is simply the act of acknowledging our sins to God. It is not only key to our salvation; it is also vital in maintaining fellowship with God. We serve a faithful and just God, but the only way to experience this level of His forgiveness is through confession. Instead of brushing off our sins or denying that we have sin, we are called to confess our sins.
His faithfulness will not disappoint. Oh no! He will cleanse us of all unrighteousness!
Are you quick to confess your sins to God knowing He is faithful to cleanse you from all unrighteousness?
